N Biren Singh To Be Manipur Chief Minister Again

N Biren Singh has been chosen as Manipur Chief Minister again. Nearly, ten days after election results came, the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has announced Mr. Singh as the Chief Minister among the two more contenders – Yumnam Khemchand and Biswajit Singh.

All the three had met with the BJP’s central leadership in Delhi yesterday, as the party discussed who would be the next Chief Minister of the Manipur state.

Biswajit Singh, who was also in the race for the CM post, has been in the party longer than Biren Singh, but the party top leaders have chosen Biren for the top post.

A third contender backed by the BJP’s ideological mentor RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) for the CM’s seat had also emerged in Manipur. The RSS-backed leader and previous assembly speaker Tumnam Khemchand Singh, was called to Delhi by the party leadership on Saturday.

Biren Singh started his career as a footballer and got recruited in the Border Security Force (BSF) playing for its team in domestic competitions. After leaving the BSF, Mr. Biren became a journalist.

Despite having had no formal training and experience, he began a daily, Naharolgi Thoudang, in 1992 and worked as its editor till 2001.

Biren joined politics in the year 2022, he fought and won his first electoral battle from Manipur’s Heingang assembly constituency. In 2007, he retained the seat on a Congress party ticket and served as a minister till 2012. Four years later, he joined the BJP, and in 2017 again won from his seat, after which he was made the Chief Minister.
