For the upcoming presidential elections, the BJP (Bharatiya Janta Party) authorized its president JP Nadda, and Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to hold talks with various political parties, including the opposition parties. Neither the BJP-led NDA nor the opposition parties have announced their candidate for the presidential elections so far.
The election for the next president will be conducted on July 18, in which 4809 electors, including MPs and MLAs, will vote to elect the new President.
Going by the strength in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha as well as in many state assemblies, the BJP is in a comfortable position to ensure victory in the Presidential election. The party leadership is also hopeful of non-NDA and non-UPA parties such as BJD and YSRCP support its nominated candidate. These two parties had supported BJP’s nominated Ram Nath Kovind in the last presidential polls.
Meanwhile, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has also reached out to various opposition leaders. including NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) chief Sharad Pawar and TMC (Trinamul Congress) supremo and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, for consultation over the presidential elections.
The Presidential polls will be conducted on July 18 and the counting of votes will take place on July 21.
