Punjab Elections 2022: EC Registers Case Against CM Channi For Violating Guidelines

Punjab Elections 2022: Taking note of the violation by Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi, EC (Election Commissioner) has registered a case against him for campaigning after the deadline. Reportedly, Mr. Channi was campaigning in the Mansa district of Punjab for Congress candidate singer-turned-politician Sidhu Moose Wala. The CM violated the guidelines while holding the door-to-door campaign in Mansa just two days ahead of the Punjab Assembly Elections.

The EC has registered a case against Charanjit Singh Channi under section 188 at Mansa. As per the EC guidelines, candidates were supposed to stop their campaigning after 6 PM on Friday. CM Channi held a Padha Yatra (Foot march) along with party workers and Mansa candidate Sidhu Moose Wala.

The ground report mentioned that Charanjit Singh Channi has released the party manifesto in Chandigarh and left for Patiala at around 5 OM and reached at 6 PM. Despite time lack, the Congress leader has chosen to continue campaigning.

The assembly polls in Punjab will be held in a single phase on 20th February and the counting of votes will take place on 10th March. In the 2017 state elections, Congress bagged 77 seats in the 117-member assembly, while AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) emerged as the second-largest party with 20 seats. While the SAD-BJP alliance could only manage 18 seats.
